Submental Liposuction

What is Submental Liposuction?

Submental liposuction is a procedure that targets the area just below the chin (submental region). While there are many reasons it may be used, submental liposuction is commonly associated with the removal of jowls. Because of this, it is sometimes known as jowl liposuction.

Submental liposuction is also used to treat:

  • Excess neck fat
  • Hanging jawline
  • Lack of skin elasticity
  • Loss of neck contour
  • Excess skin stemming from weight loss
  • “Turkey neck”

How Does Submental Liposuction Work?

The procedure follows the same basic concept as traditional liposuction; incisions are made and fat is removed using a special tool known as a cannula. Where submental liposuction differs is in the use of smaller tools and incisions. Because the submental portion of the head is much smaller, less invasion is necessary to achieve the desired result.

During the actual procedure:

  • Anesthesia is applied to the area of treatment.
  • Small incisions are made just under the chin.
  • Fat is removed from the area using a small tube.
  • Temporary stitches are applied to close the incisions.

Submental Liposuction Recovery

Submental liposuction typically takes just 30 minutes to complete, and can be performed as an outpatient procedure. This means that the person receiving the surgery can return home the same day. Stitches will usually be removed around five days after treatment.

In the first few days after surgery, it’s important to avoid eating tough foods and participating in even light activity. Avoiding strenuous exercise and potentially harmfully situations is recommended for several weeks. Full recovery most often occurs around four weeks after surgery.
